Krediter i lust och nöd: Skattebönder i Torstuna härad, Västmanlands län, 1770‒1870
This thesis analyses the role of loans and credit for Swedish freeholders (skattebönder) from 1770 to 1870. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of credit for investments to improve agricultural operations, acquire land and respond to rural crises from the household perspective.

Affective responses to music in depressed individuals: Aesthetic judgments, emotions, and the impact of music-evoked autobiographical memories
The primary aim of this thesis is to explore whether depressed individuals have distinct affective responses to music, in terms of aesthetic judgments, emotional reactions, and emotion regulation.

Block Copolymer Electrolytes: Polymers for Solid-State Lithium Batteries
The use of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for lithium battery devices is a rapidly growing research area. The liquid electrolytes that are used today are inflammable and harmful towards the battery components. The adoption of SPEs could drastically improve this situation, but they still suffer from a too low performance at ambient temperatures for most practical applications.

Computational Studies of Macrocycles and Molecular Modeling of Hepatitis C Virus NS3 Protease Inhibitors
Computational tools are utilized in the drug discovery process to discover, design, and optimize new therapeutics. One important approach is structure-based drug design which relies on knowledge about the 3D structure of the biological target.

Characterization of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli water isolates
The aim of this thesis was to better understand the water survival strategies and pathogenic potential of Campylobacter water isolates. For this purpose, C. jejuni and C. coli, originally isolated from incoming water at surface water plants, were characterized using whole genome sequencing, phenotypical assays, water survival experiments and an in vitro infection model.

Plasma Enhanced Chemical- and Physical- Vapor Depositions Using Hollow Cathodes
This thesis investigates performance of selected hollow cathode plasma sources developed at the Plasma group, at Uppsala University for coating deposition at moderate pressures.

Clinical Pathway Implementation and Teamwork in Swedish Intensive Care: Challenges in Evidence-Based Practice and Interprofessional Collaboration
The overall aim of the thesis was to develop comprehensive empirical knowledge and understanding of CP implementation and teamwork in Swedish intensive care units (ICUs). Four studies were included (I-IV).

Large scale integration and interactive exploration of cancer data – with applications to glioblastoma
Glioblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor, with a median survival of approximately 15 months. The standard of care treatment consists of surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy, where chemotherapy only prolongs survival by approximately 3 months.

Preparation and Characterization of Lead Halide Perovskites: Towards sustainable, cost-effective and upscalable solar cell manufacture
This thesis focuses on exploring the photophysics of the perovskite material as well as the development of different perovskite preparation processes and materials for potential use in large-scale manufacture and tandem solar cell applications.

Diputation: Theoretical studies of lattice- and spin-polarons
Theoretical studies of lattice- and spin-polarons are presented in this thesis, where the primary tool is ab-initio electronic structure calculations. The studies are performed with employment of a variety of analytical and computational methods.

Genome evolution and adaptation of a successful allopolyploid, Capsella bursa-pastoris
This thesis for the first time shows that the evolutionary pathways of allopolyploids may differ not only on the species level but also between populations within one species. It also supports the theory that alloploidy provides an increased amount of genetic material that enables evolutionary flexibility.

Prescription – Pollution – Poo – Pandemics – Priorities: Neuraminidase Inhibitors from an Environmental Resistance Development Perspective
In this thesis, a H7N9 was exposed to oseltamivir and a H1N1 and H4N2 to zanamivir and peramivir. Furthermore, a H1N1 with the H275Y mutation was exposed to zanamivir in order to assess the additional development of zanamivir resistance and the persistence of the H275Y mutation in the presence of zanamivir.

Towards Clinical Implementation of Dynamic Positron Emission Tomography in Neurodegenerative Diseases
The aim of this thesis was to validate simplified analysis methods, suitable for clinical use, for quantification of dopamine transporter (DAT) availability in patients with parkinsonism using [11C]PE2I PET and tau accumulation in AD patients with [18F]THK5317 PET.

Structure Function Relationships in Pyrimidine Degrading and Biocatalytic Enzymes, and Their Implications for Cancer Therapy and Green Chemistry
This thesis includes the work of two separate projects, studies on pyrimidine degrading enzymes and studies on in vitro evolved enzymes. The common denominator of both projects was the use of structural information to explain functional effects, observed in the studied biocatalysts.

Precision medicine and targeted therapy: Turning the tables on cancer
The work presented in this thesis exemplifies the potency of combination treatments based on a precise understanding of the targeted cancer. Utilizing not one but several of the molecular characteristics of a specific cancer will help turn the tables on cancer and improve patient outcomes in the future.
