The global constituents of the universe are now well understood: in addition to baryons, dark matter and some "vacuum energy" are the basic constituents of the universe, and they, especially the latter two, control its evolution. The actions of baryons are much more complicated. I discuss the actions caused by baryons, a way to study them and problems yet to be understood.
Professor Masataka Fukugita is a world famous expert in the field of cosmology, where he has been extremely productive with many well-cited papers both on theory and with observational collaborations. These concern the large scale structure and energy content of the Universe, that have contributed to forming today's standard model of cosmology. In particular, he was one of the first to realize that a cosmological constant (i.e. dark energy) was needed to get a consistent picture of the universe. He then turned to observations, and has been leading an important group contributing to the world-leading Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). He also contributes to the science of the 8 meter-class Subary Telescope, which is used among other things to study supernovae and gravitational lensing.
