Lecture with Deborah Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University in Georgia, United States. The event will be preceded by a free screening of the film "Denial".

In 2000 Deborah Lipstadt was compelled to defend herself in the London High Court against libel charges brought against her by Holocaust denier David Irving.  She and a team of stellar historians conclusively proved that Irving had falsified, misquoted, and misrepresented historical evidence.  This lecture will demonstrate the methodologies used by the historians in the courtroom and explore what happens when history confronts the law.  It will also ask just how seriously we should take Holocaust deniers. Are they really a threat or are they the equivalent of flat-earth theorists?

Deborah Lipstadt is Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University in Georgia, United States. She is author of Denying the Holocaust (1993), History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier(2005) and The Eichmann Trial (2011).

The lecture will be preceded by a screening of the film “Denial”, which deals with the Irving-Lipstadt libel case in London. It will be screened at Fyrisbiografen next to the Main University Building at 14.00 (sharp). If you wish to join us, please pre-register by mail to event@hist.uu.se.
