All human activity is embedded in social context and structure. The composition of the group individuals interact in, the structure of interactions, and collective or other-based incentives affect individual perceptions, behavior, and outcomes. However, analyzing social interactions and groups involves its own set of methodological challenges related to gathering data, reducing data heterogeneity, and addressing the non-independence of observations. In this talk, I will present two recent projects that use computational methods on digital trace data to study social interactions and group effects. The first project uses temporal network analysis to investigate the social contagion of cheating in a multiplayer online game, and the second employs multi-level matching for a quasi-experiment on the effects of social comparison on effort and performance in crowdsourced programming contests.
