Ambassador Jan Eliasson, former Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador and Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (2012-2016) discusses the connections between human rights, development, and security.

Uppsala University Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson introduces the event and Eliasson’s speech is followed by a discussion with Professor Peter Wallensteen. There will also be an opportunity for questions from the audience.  

Jan Eliasson is one of Sweden’s foremost diplomats and has a broad experience of international cooperation. In his position as UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson he emphasized the connections between human rights and the work for development, peace and security.

Mr. Eliasson was Foreign Minister of Sweden (2006), State Secretary for Foreign Affairs (1994-2000) Ambassador to the UN (1988-1992) and to the United States (2000-2005). He was president of the UN General Assembly 2005-06.

Ambassador Eliasson has had several international assignments as a mediator, notably in Sudan, Caucasus and the Middle East. They are analyzed in the book The Go-Between from 2010. He is an Honorary Doctor of the University, has served as Visiting Professor of Uppsala University and has been a frequent lecturer, notably in the Department of Peace and Conflict Research. Eliasson is chairing SIPRI, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. 

This event is part of Uppsala University series of lectures on human rights, honoring the memory of its previous Rector Martin H:son Holmdahl (1923-2015) and in whose name the university created a prize to teachers and students active in this field.
