The U.S. Mexico-Border and Mexican Americans:
Contradictions of U.S. History

Professor Sae-Saue will provide a history of the U.S.-Mexico border, showing how policies of policing immigrants from Mexico contribute to ways Mexican Americans, already citizens of the US, experience “alien citizenship”: the condition by which citizens of the US are perpetually perceived and treated as foreign. The talk will examine how this perception of otherness impacts Mexican American historical experiences of exclusion from the US democratic project; he will conclude by examining how Mexican American and Chicanx art provides an ethics for representing and remembering this community’s history.
