The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture will last for 45 minutes and afterwards the audience may ask questions. The lecture will be given in English.
Arynes are fascinating intermediates in organic chemistry. They react with an enormously diverse set of possible reagents and allow the introduction of two functional groups in one synthetic step. Arynes offer unique options for a synthetic chemist, increasing recognition of which has propelled them from their mid-20th century status as controversial curiosities to the bleeding edge of arylation methodology today.
In this lecture, I will introduce the rise of arynes in synthesis, what governs the selectivity with which they react and describe some future challenges for their broad acceptance.
